Utah Lady Grizzlies Hockey Team Wins Big in Dallas, Texas, and Secures Spot at the 2015 Toyota/USA Hockey Girls Tier II National Championship Tournament

Utah Lady Grizzlies Hockey Team Wins Rocky Mountain District 19U Title

Salt Lake City, Utah, March 9, 2015—Just as the plane was departing from Dallas, Texas, a flight attendant’s voice came onto the loud speaker to announce congratulations to the Utah Lady Grizzlies for winning the USA Hockey, Rocky Mountain District 19U Girls Tier II tournament.  The patrons on the plane clapped and the goalie, Sam Zvonkovic raised the trophy in victory, from seat 22 E.   Earlier that day, on Sunday, March 8, the Utah Lady Grizzlies defeated the Colorado Selects team in a 3-0 shutout, securing the Rocky Mountain District title.

With the wins in Dallas (after defeating teams from Arizona and Colorado), comes another “victory” for the Lady Grizzlies by securing a spot to represent the Rocky Mountain District in the Toyota-USA Hockey Girls Tier II National Championships March 26-30, 2015 in Lansing, Michigan.

The Lady Grizzlies team is made up of 14 players from Utah, ranging in ages from 14 to18 years old.  The players were selected from a tryout process, and they’ve been practicing and playing together since August, 2014. At their first meeting as a team, the girls set a goal to earn a trip to the National Tournament this year.  According to coach Stan Weiss, “This is truly an exceptional group of young athletes.  Not only are their hockey skills, commitment and focus exceptional, but their trust and belief in each other is truly fantastic. I’ve been coaching a long time, and I’ve only coached one other team like this before, but it was a boys’ team.  These girls are awesome.  They have fun together, they love the game of hockey, they work hard, and they love one another.  There isn’t any drama, and the team bonding and chemistry is amazing.  I am very proud of them.”

The Utah Lady Grizzlies have two and a half weeks to prepare for their national tournament in Lansing, Michigan, but they are ready to play, and excited to see some great hockey.

The Utah Lady Grizzlies Hockey organization is a nonprofit hockey program that is geared towards the growth of hockey for girls and young women ages 14 through 18, while promoting a positive and enjoyable environment for kids and parents.
